Georges Mandel and the Third Republic
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (October, 1970)
Author: John M. Sherwood
Average review score:

Biography of the French Churchill
An interesting and provocative biography of a man virtually unknown in Anglo-American history. Sherwood's work is a must read for anyone seeking to understand the crucial battle for control of French policy in the years leading up to the Second World War. You cannot understand France between the wars without understanding Mandel and there is no better place to begin understanding Mandel than Sherwood's text.

The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology: Celebrated Discoveries from the People's Republic of China
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (November, 1999)
Authors: Xiaoneng Yang, National Gallery of Art (U.S.), Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
Average review score:

Beautiful book and a big bargain
The paperback edition is unbelievably priced at less than $20 for 584 pages of high quality paper with every photo printed in full color. The editorial reviews says it all. But I just wanted to add that looking at the diversity of artifacts (many of which look surprisingly strange) in the early periods of China's history further I'm further convinced that the modern Han people came from the merging of many ancient cultures.

The Golem Triptych: A Dramatic Trilogy
Published in Hardcover by Asylum Arts Pub (March, 1994)
Author: Eric Basso
Average review score:

A tour-de-force. Basso is the last of the great Modernists.
This triology spans the entire range of theatrical writing, both historical and stylistic. Basso's command of dialog, of humor, of dramatic possibility is astounding, his scope Wagnerian. This is hardcore literature, folks, real triple LLL

Gone Forever
Published in Hardcover by Rutledge Books, Inc. (January, 1997)
Author: Mai Ling Chiu
Average review score:

Struggles, love and relationship, war.....all in one book
A very interesting biography describing details and strength of human spirit in times of trouble, where ambitions are realised, love flourished, relationship strengthened and most importantly, a niche carved out. A very inspirational book showing that the rich Chinese people could endure as much hardship as the poor illustrated in Pearl Buck's novels. Curious bout boarding life in schools, then read this!!! At the end of the book, u might want to ask yourself whether you are a carrot, an egg, or coffee beans when put inside boiling water.

Gorbachev's Reforms: De-Stalinization through Demilitarization
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (October, 1997)
Author: Susanne Sternthal
Average review score:

most comprehensive analysis of Gorbachev's period
This is the only comprehensive analysis of Gorbachev's reform policies. The approach is historical. There is no faddish jargon. The writing is clear and elegant. The author explains very convincingly how Gorbachev struggled with elements of the Communist Party apparatus to institute his reforms. Highly recommended for courses in contemporary Russian history and on the Cold War era.

The Great Challenge: The Myth of Laissez-Faire in the Early Republic
Published in Hardcover by George Braziller (April, 1989)
Author: Frank Bourgin
Average review score:

Myth Shattering
Frank Bougin's " The Great Challenge" is truly a myth shattering book. Bougin documents the active role forseen for the national government not just by it's major proponent Alexander Hamilton, but by Thomas Jefferson, and his Treasury Secratary Albert Gallatin. Jefferson's support for a national program for roads and a national transportation system are amply documented. Also Bougin digs up Jefferson's long lost plans for a national university and federal support for education. He shows how Gallatin and Jefferson paid down the national debt and recommended to Congress a plan to apply the surplus revenues to education, roads, and canals. Bougin also reviews the forward thinking plans of Albert Gallatin and John Q. Adams in expanding the role of the federal government. Overall a great buy.

Guardians of the Republic: A History of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps of the Us Army
Published in Hardcover by Fawcett Books (May, 1994)
Author: Ernest F. Fisher
Average review score:

A must-read book for professional noncommissioned officers
This book is one of the best books on the entire history of the US Army NCO. It starts from the early days of our military, with Baron von Stueben and the birth of the NCO. It cronologically describes the evolution of the sergeant, going through each period of our nation. It describes the breakdown of the Corps during Vietnam, and the effort to rebuild in the 70-80s. This book details the return of prestige to the NCO, and how we came to succeeed in the 90s, and which resulted in our success in Operation Desert Storm. I encourage all NCOs read this, and add it to your library. MSG(P) Daniel Elder

The introduction is great, but the journey through the different political writings is the best.

The Handbook of Central Asia: A Comprehensive Survey of the New Republics
Published in Hardcover by I B Tauris & Co Ltd (February, 2000)
Author: Giampaolo R. Capisani
Average review score:

Best Referrence on Central Asia
This is an excellent reference on the complex ancient and modern histories of the 5 new post-Soviet Republics of Central Asia.
Each section of the book - Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan, and Kyrgyzstan - contains detailed maps, and the ethnic, religious, linguistic and socio-economic history of each area in detail.
The environmental devastation from Soviet activities, such as the drying up of the Aral Sea and the radioactive contamination from atmospheric testing in Kazakhstan, makes it an excellent source for environmentalists.
It also covers the geo-political significance of an area that U.S. foreign policy has targeted for its oil pipelines. The impact of Afghanistan and instabilities in the area on these republics is outlined.
This is an excellent reference for researchers, historians, the business community or people working in these regions. Extensive bibliographical sources, the detailed maps and in-depth coverage of complex issues makes this source unique. It is one of the only one-volume books, up to date, available in English on an increasingly important region.
